The program Research on Coral Reef Engineering Geology Evaluation and Its Engineering Mechanics Effect proposed by researcher WANG Ren from IRSM wins support from Key Program of National Natural Science Fund. The program wins support of 3.3 million Yuan.

With the further development and project construction of ocean resource in coral reef area, engineering geological problems caused by coral reef sediment increase rapidly. The program Research on Coral Reef Engineering Geology Evaluation and Its Engineering Mechanics Effect is based on engineering geological characteristics of typical coral reef in the South China Sea. Basing on sedimentary source, and combining hydrodynamic environment characteristics, researchers make use of technological means including on-site survey, in-situ test, model test and theory analysis, they also put forward coral reef classification method. By combining factors including topography and landform character, tectonic characteristics and sedimentary evolution mode, the program release sediment origin properties and the formation rule. Basing on coral reef sediment composition, fabric and its physical and mechanical properties, researchers distinguish engineering mechanical effect of coral reef from different zones. Researchers put forward engineering geological evaluation method of coral reef under the consideration of particle breakage, base selection and foundation treatment scheme. The methods and schemes provide technological support to the making of engineering investigation, foundation treatment and design guide of coral reef. The program implementation has important scientific significance and engineering value for the research on ocean resource development in the South China Sea and coral reef engineering geological research.
