On June 13, The Ninth Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award Conference is held in Beijing, 26 engineering scientific and technological experts win the Engineering Award and Youth Award seperately. GE Xiurun, the academician of Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) and researcher of Wuhan Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics(IRSM) win the Engineering Award of rock mechanics and water hydropower engineering.
Academician GE Xiurun has long been engaged in the research of numerical analysis method of rock and soil engineering. He is one of the earliest batch of scholars introducing finite element method into rock mass engineering. With his study on 3D infinite elements and joint infinite element, GE has developed the concept and model of joint element, promoting the research of unbounded element. GE Xiurun has put forward the plasticity analysis method of rock mass with his student ZHENG Hong; In 1973, GE Xiurun accomplished the finite element analysis of underground cavern group of 511 thermal power plant in Sichuan province, which is considered as the first case in similar projects in China.
Academician GE Xiurun has made great contributions to key hydraulic and energy project construction, including the Three-Gorges Project, Gezhouba Project, and Nonlinear Analysis of Three-dimensional Finite Element for Gravity Arch-dam and Complicated Foundation of the Geheyan in Qingjiang River. GE also helped to solve key technology problems in major projects, such as Xiaowan Hydropower Station, Ertan Hydropower Station, Fengtan Hydropower Station, Beijing Subway, Shenzhen Subway, and Jiangxi Yinshan Lead-Zinc Mine. He won 21 provincial and national awards with his contributions to these projects.
GE devoted himself in introducing advanced technology into ancient relics protection. He works as the Chinese expert and leader of expert team in several sino-foreign cooperative protection projects, including Dunhuang Grottoes, Datong Yungang Cave,Shanxi Buddhist temple. Academician GE Xiurun was in charge of the static and dynamic 3D infinite elements analysis of copper and ancient mine ruins, buddhist temple grotto and three buddha; he had also put forward strengthening and monitoring scheme, playing a key role in the project accomplishment.In 2001, GE proposed the protection scheme of non-pressure container in the protection of White Crane Ridge, which is the national treasure in three gorges.
GE Xiurun has been awarded multiple academic prizes and honorary titles. In April 1978, GE was awarded the National Advanced Workers; In 1981 and 1982, he was supported by the Humboldt Fund in research with professor L.Müller. In 1988, academician GE was awarded the Young Experts with Outstanding Contributions, winning special government allowance from the state council. In 1995, GE Xiurun was elected the academician of Chinese Academy of Science.
The Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award is considered the top prize in the engineering science and technology field of China, the award aims to reward the engineers and scientists with outstanding achievements and contributions to the field of engineering science and technology. There are totally 174 winners awarded since 1996.
