At the invitation of IRSM, Professor Ranjith PG from Monash University, one talent of CAS President's International Fellowship Initiative (PIFI), visited IRSM, and delivered an academic report with the title CO2 Sequestration in Deep Saline Aquifers. Researcher LI Jianchun hosted the meeting, and awarded 2017 Professor Access Certification of PIFI.

Prof. Ranjith firstly introduced the current global energy and climate problems, pointed out that the emissions of greenhouse gases would have significant influences on global climate and ecological security, climate agreement signed in Paris in 2016 marked the challenges of taking action to solve the problems of climate change all over the world. Scientific community had a series of experiments in carbon emissions, carbon capture and carbon sequestration, one of them caused the scientists' attention, that is the technology of CO2 sequestration in deep saline aquifers. As one of the leaders in the field of CO2 geological storage, Prof. Ranjith introduced the mechanism of CO2 sequestration in deep saline aquifers, it included: 1) the physical and chemical properties of CO2 under the condition of geologic sequestration; 2) the measure and mechanism of CO2 sequestration in deep saline aquifers; 3) the physical and chemical changes of CO2 sequestration in deep saline aquifers; 4) the comparison of mechanical properties' change of saline aquifers before and after injecting CO2; 5) the flow pattern of saline aquifers after injecting CO2.

Ranjith is a professor of department of geomechanics in Monash University, founder and director of the earth energy laboratory, he is a former training director of department of civil engineering, deputy director of bureau of civil engineering. His research areas includes CO2 Sequestration, unconventional oil and gas, petroleum geology, deep geothermal resource exploitation, mining geology, rock mechanics and other fields. He has published more than 250 academic achievements, including a monograph and 165 journals. Prof. Ranjith holds a post in many journals, such as chief editor of Geomechanics and Geophysics for GeoEnergy and GeoResource, vice chief editor of Journal of Unconventional Oil and Gas Resources, and editorial board member of Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering and Engineering Geology. He achieve ARC Future Scholarship in 2009, Australian Leadership Award in 2013.
