China has announced its State Top Scientific and Technological Award for Year 2009 on Jan. 11, 2010. Two scientific achievements from the Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics (IRSM), Chinese Academy of Sciences, have won national awards.
With an aim to speed up scientific progress and improve the country's overall strength, the State Council set up five awards in 2000: the State Top Scientific and Technological Award, the State Natural Science Award, the State Technological Invention Award (STIA), the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award (SSTPA) and the China International Science and Technology Cooperation Award.
The two honoured projects, ‘Disaster forming mechanism and compositive controlling technology of tailings dam’ (the second prize, IRSM as the PI) & ‘Package technology for highway construction in swelling soils area’ (the first prize, IRSM as a participant), had both won the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award (SSTPA).
