"As China's economy booms, the need for carbon capture and storage is becoming increasingly urgent.", written by Josh Fenn in his article published in Science on Sep 28, 2009, "China Grapples With A Burning Question" discussed China's recent efforts for the development of CCS technology.

CCS refers to the capture of CO2 from emissions, followed by storage, thereby preventing it from entering the atmosphere. To be useful for climate change mitigation, storage should be for at least many hundreds of years until well past the end of the fossil fuel era.

The article reported the coming two new projects of China's first major steps toward trapping carbon emissions - Shenhua's coal-to-liquid plant in Erdos & GreenGen, an integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) plant. While discussing the CO2 storage potential in China, parts of Prof. Xiaochun LI's research achievements on CCS has been cited to explain the situation.
