12 Sep 2005, GRS (Gesellschaft für Anlagen- und Reaktorsicherheit mbH) Doctor Chun-liang Zhang visits the IRSM, CAS (Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences).

GRS is a scientific-technical expert and research organization. It provides interdisciplinary knowledge, advanced methods and qualified data for assessing and improving the safety of technical facilities and for further developing the protection of man and the environment from technical hazards and risks. GRS activities are mainly focused on the area of nuclear safety, where it is Germany’s central expert institution.

As the experts on Final Repository Safety Research with Nuclear Waste, the purpose of Dr. Zhang’s visit is to know more about IRSM and discuss about the possibilities of research cooperation between GRS and IRSM, CAS. “It’s my first time to come to IRSM, but after I looked around the institute, I think it will be a great partner to work with in the future”, Dr. Zhang said. The laboratory equipments and projects which the institute participated also impressed Dr. Zhang.

On 13 Sep morning, Dr. Zhang gave a lecture on “Research work on disposal of radioactive waste in deep geological formations”, nearly 30 PhD students take the course. As the research on disposal of radioactive waste in deep geological formations is not only a new research direction of the Institute, but also for the great demands of the Nation, the research team of IRSM are truly found of Dr. Zhang’s visit. We hope the cooperative framework between IRSM and GRS could be established soon in the near future.
