At the invitation of researcher FENG Xiating, Director of State Key Laboratory of Geomechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, Doctor Peter Kaiser, the Academician of Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE), is visiting the State Key Laboratory of Geomechanics and Geotechnical Engineering from May 17 to May 23. Doctor Kaiser is also present at the High-end Forum of Scientific and Technological Developing Strategy of International Engineering Projects-Safe Construction and Risk Management of Major Underground Engineering Projects. Doctor Peter Kaiser is the director of Underground Mining Construction Center of Rio Tinto Group, the professor of Mining Engineering in Laurentian University, and the academician of Canadian Academy of Engineering.
During his visiting period, Doctor Kaiser gives the academic report Rock Mass Strength at Depth and Implications for Support Design, discussing the challenges in rock mass strength determination, the deformation behavior of brittle rock and its potential significance to the pillar and support design. Doctor Kaiser believes that possible defects may exist in current experience design standard; deep engineering excavation needs quantized field observation to get more economical support and control measures. Doctor Kaiser delivers the other lecture Risk in Rock Engineering Design afterwards.
On May 18 and 19, the High-end Forum of Scientific and Technological Developing Strategy of International Engineering Projects-Safe Construction and Risk Management of Major Underground Engineering Projects is held in Wuhan, Doctor Kaiser is invited to give the special report with the title Support Design under Rock Burst Conditions on the forum. He summarizes the rock burst problems faced by deep mining engineering, and puts forward feasible support design suggestions according to different types of rock burst, which are with great significance for reducing rock burst disaster in deep underground engineering.
During his visiting period, Doctor Kaiser deeply discussed about the support problems in deep underground engineering with researcher FENG Xiating and the rock burst working group of his intelligent rock and soil mechanics team.
